ROP Bursary
 |
The ROP Bursary was established by delegates to the 1990 Agriculture Union Triennial National Convention in recognition of the former Record of Performance Inspectors (Dairy Program) of now-defunct Agriculture Union Locals 13 and 25. The jobs of these members were lost to the private sector through government privatization.
In 1890, Dr. S. M. Babcock developed a test to measure the amount of butterfat in milk. A milk recording program commenced across Canada in 1908. By 1950, all cows in a herd were required to be tested. The Canadian Record of Performance for Dairy Program was identified as a national supervised milk recording program that collected individual animal production data and certified animal records for breeding purposes.
Our former ROP Inspectors were appointed by Agriculture Canada to supervise the milking and collection of data, to enforce the rules and to provide information on ROP to herd owners. From 1905 to 1985, the Canadian Record of Performance for dairy cattle provided for the establishment of production credentials for each lactation period of each individual of several breeds of dairy cattle as a basis for the development of an intelligent and constructive breeding program.
Several hundred of ROP Inspectors across Canada were members of two locals: Local 13 in the province of Quebec and Local 25 for all other members across Canada. |
The Federal ROP Dairy Program in Ontario was taken over the by the Ontario Dairy Herd Improvement Corporation on June 25, 1985, and privatization of the ROP Program was completed across the country within several years. Our Local 13 and Local 25 members were scattered. Some started working for their new employers, others were employed elsewhere in the federal public service and others just quit or retired.
This $1,000 bursary is open to all Agriculture Union members and their dependants. However, it must be must be applied to an agriculture course from a recognized institution.
Applications must be completed, sent and received at the Agriculture Union National Office by June 30 of each year. The mailing address is: Agriculture Union, Suite 1000, 233 Gilmour Street, Ottawa, ON K2P 0P2.
