Equal
Opportunities is a term used in the labour movement to ensure equal access
for five designated groups:
- Women
- Persons with Disabilities
- Aboriginals
- Members of Visible Minorities
- Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered
Equal
Opportunities initiatives are not only aimed at equality in
the workplace but also for equality for designated group members
within all structures in the union. The goal is to ensure
that our union is reflective of the diversity of our membership
and to provide equal opportunities for these members to be involved
in all levels of the Agriculture Union from the grassroots to
our leadership.
Employment
Equity is defined in the
Employment Equity Act. This act only recognizes four designated
groups:
- Women
- Persons with Disabilities
- Aboriginals
- Members of Visible Minorities
The
purpose of this Act is to achieve equality in the workplace
so that no person shall be denied employment opportunities or
benefits for reasons unrelated to ability and, in the fulfilment
of that goal, to correct the conditions of disadvantage in employment
experienced by women, aboriginal peoples, persons with disabilities
and members of visible minorities by giving effect to the principle
that employment equity means more than treating persons in the
same way but also requires special measures and the accommodation
of differences.
Employment
equity is a legislative requirement for all workplaces represented
by the Agriculture Union. Departments are further required to
consult and collaborate with all bargaining units represented
within the department.
