Human rights committee update

The Agriculture Union National Human Rights Committee met in Ottawa on January 8–9, 2026, bringing together elected human rights representatives from across the country for two days of meaningful discussion, reflection, and planning.

The committee began by reviewing and approving its updated Terms of Reference and receiving updates from National President Milton Dyck, First Vice-President Pat St. George, and 3rd National Executive Vice-President Audrey St-Germain. Workforce adjustment—examined through an equity lens—was a key theme throughout the meeting. Members also made progress on several ongoing projects, including the development of a new committee pamphlet, accessible logo design, and survey planning.

On the second day, the committee welcomed Hassan Husseini from Labour for Palestine, who delivered a powerful and thought-provoking presentation on human rights and the Palestinian cause.

Dedicated time was spent on preparing for the 2026 Regional Seminars, with a strong focus on member engagement, campaign integration, and identifying training opportunities and feedback surveys to support human rights work at the grassroots level.

The committee also met with Communications Officer Aaron Lakoff to discuss strategies for improving messaging, highlighting important days of recognition, and enhancing the Agriculture Union’s social media presence.

This was the first in-person gathering since December 2024, and the energy in the room reflected a renewed sense of purpose. The committee is excited to enter Regional Seminar season and looks forward to connecting with members across the country to advance equity, justice, and inclusion in meaningful ways.
