Did you know that if you’re a Rand member, you’re already paying union dues—but you’re not yet a full member of the Agriculture Union? By signing a union card, you become a Member in Good Standing (MIGS), and you unlock the full power of your union.
From now until December 15th, 2025, the Agriculture Union is running a campaign to convert as many Rand members to MIGS as possible. Not only are their prizes for locals who sign up the most members (see below), but there are plenty of advantages on a personal and collective level to becoming a full member of the Agriculture Union and PSAC.
What is a Rand Member?
The term comes from the historic Rand Decision of 1946, issued by Justice Ivan Rand. This ruling established that all workers in a unionized workplace must pay union dues, even if they choose not to join the union. This ensures unions have the resources to represent all employees fairly. The Decision sought to bring industrial peace to the tumultuous post-WWII period. In return for being able to collect union dues for all workers in a workplace, unions agreed to only go on strike when a collective agreement expired.
So a Rand member is technically a member of the Agriculture Union, as they pay dues and benefit from all the gains fought for by the union. However, Rand members do not have full membership rights, such as voting, attending union meetings, or accessing exclusive member benefits.
Why Sign a Union Card?
There are so many benefits to signing a union card! Here are a few of them:
- Have a voice in your union – Members in good standing can vote in union elections, run for office, and participate in the rich democratic life of the Agriculture Union. Have your say on who represents you, and what positions your union takes.
- Access training and learning opportunities – both the Agriculture Union and PSAC offer frequent trainings and learning/networking opportunities to MIGS such as workshops and national or regional conferences (eg. National health and safety conferences, national women’s conference, etc.)
- Enjoy member benefits, including discounted rates on home, auto and life insurance, hotel reservations, and car rentals.
- Improved communication from your union – becoming a MIGS ensures that we have your updated contact info, and you’ll never miss important updates from the union on issues that matter the most to you.
About the Campaign
The Agriculture Union has launched a Rand Conversion Campaign, with the goal of converting as many Rand members to MIGS as possible by December 15, 2025.
This campaign is crucial for ensuring maximum delegate representation at the upcoming:
- Agriculture Union Convention (August 19–21, 2026)
- PSAC Convention (May 29–June 3, 2027)
